Well, I've been waiting, as patiently as could be since it was announced during the summer, but I finally got the new Rise Against CD, Appeal to Reason.
People that are paying attention will know that the CD doesn't come out October 7th, with is 4 days from the date on which this was posted. Well, if you're somewhat computer literate, you can put 2+2 together and you can figure out how I got it. I'm pretty much Captain Jack Sparrow, except not gay. Not even bi.
Now I consider myself to be a pretty hardcore Rise Against fan. I have all the CDs, all the LPs, EPs, etc. But here's a small bit of truth, I hadn't really heard of them until I played 'Prayer of the Refugee' in Guitar Hero III: Legends of Rock. After rocking the fuck out to that song, I went and checked the band's Myspace and listened to a few of their singles, and those singles led to albums, and those albums led to the full discography and works, which led to me purchasing tickets for their Oct 11th show in Hampton Beach, which may lead to...I don't know, sucking Tim McIlrath's dick backstage? I'll do it, I don't give a fuck.
Now that story pretty much makes me seem really fucking lame, but I've listened to the music enough and researched and discussed the band enough to have a somewhat educated opinion on their music, and now you're gonna read what I have to say about the new CD right? Right? RIGHT?!
LOOK AT THE FUCKING COVER ART FOR FUCK'S SAKES
I lol'd because the guy giving the salute reminds me so much of Big Boss at the end of MGS4. Also, I think their logo is pretty fucking sweet, as simple as it may be.
Since obtaining the CD today (Friday), I've listened to it about 4 or 5 times. I came in expecting it to be the same if not better than their previous album, 'The Sufferer and the Witness."
After they released the first song: 'Re-Education (Through Labor)' I pretty much had the biggest anticipation boner of my entire life. Then some other tracks got leaked, and my anticipation dwindled as the CD started to remind me of their other sophmore CD 'Revolutions Per Minute" than SatW. It is to be noted that there is hardly any screaming in any of the lyrics, maybe Tim McIlrath's voice is dying, maybe incorporating screamo isn't as good an idea as I think it is. All in all, it still sounds like Rise Against and that's all that really matters. There are few decent tracks. Here's a track by track review of everything that is on AtR.
Recommended Tracks:
-Re-Education (Through Labor)
-Entertainment
-Savior
-Whereabouts Unknown
-From Heads Unworthy
-Collapse (Post-Amerika)
Collapse (Post-Amerika) - Fuck year, parentheses. A good track to open the CD with. The guitar and drums are fast as expected from any punk song. When I first heard it I was like "Fuck year, this is a Rise Against CD" It will never compare to 'Chamber the Cartridge' (SatW) as an opening track.
Long Forgotten Sons - Pretty fucking sweet guitar riffs/bass in the intro and chorus. With a slower pace than most RA songs this is more like rock track than a punk/hardcore track.
Re-Education (Through Labor) - Again, fuck year parentheses. This is the song that you're probably going to hear the most. EPIC GUITARAN/EPIC LYRICAN to be had in this one. Good thing this is going to be on Guitar Hero: World Tour.
The Dirt Whispered - This is more like 'Long Forgotton Sons' but instead of sweet guitar riffage we have a fucking crazy bass line. Somewhat forgettable song.
Kotov Syndrome -This is everything a Rise Against song should be, but good lord the chorus bothers me. Goddamn it annoys the hell out of me: "SPIN OUT OF CONTROL, SPIN OUT OF CONTROL"
From Heads Unworthy - The first 2/3's of this song was amazing, with even more amazing riffage by (their new guitarist for this CD) Zach Blair. But after the second chorus they just decide to abandon it, along with the stop-and-go lyrics. It made me a little sad :(
The Strength to Go On -The opening of this song was epic enough to hold my attention. It grows on you.
Audience of One - The opening of the song reminded me of a Senses Fail song too much for me to enjoy it.
Entertainment - I like this song a lot. Epic guitar, epic bass, drums, the message the song is trying to convey is deep. The transition into that trance-like carnival music sent me into a fucking epic Sonic 3 Carnival Night Zone Act 2 flashback. And for the first and last time in the whole CD, there is some screaming, fuck year.
Hero of War - It's not a Rise Against CD until you have at least one acoustic track on there. When I first listened I thought the guitar at the very beginning sounded like 'One' (the only good Metallica song) to it I got to the first verse and it was like every other song about the war in Iraq. Then he started talking about capturing guys and pissing on them and beating them with batons and shooting female durkhas that are retreating and then I was like:
Savior - This song reminds me of 'Injection' (SatW) which is probably why I like it so much. More shreddin' on the guitar, and DEEP AND MEANINGFUL LYRICS, THIS SONG IS ABOUT ME!!111. lolololol
Hairline Fracture -Forgettable song
Whereabouts Unknown - Everytime I hear 'Whereabouts Unknown' I think about those ads for missing children on the back of milk cartons. Other than that, the song is amazing with more DEEP AND MEANINGFUL LYRICS and epic guitaran. And more screamin'
(note: when I say DEEP AND MEANINGFUL LYRICS it means I am making fun of myself for thinking that I can have some sort of personal connection with a song. Don't be ridiculous, you're not supposed to have feelings)
Maybe if I'm feeling ambitious or if I have some work I have to procrastinate on I'll probably end up talking more about Rise Against. Other than that expect some good old-fashioned raging on videogames and other random shit.
